Today may be Father’s Day, but for Ruby it is Thanksgiving. As a child she naively thought that all kids had a dad as devoted to their family as her dad was. She thought all dads worked hard, and loved to come home. She thought that all dads were madly in love with all moms and told them so often. She thought all dads took advantage of any available free time to spend it with his wife and kids. In the mind of Ruby-the-child, that was how the world worked.
It was quite a shock to Ruby in later years to learn that not only does that not ALWAYS happen, it often does not happen. The more years Ruby lives the more aware she becomes of the rare gem she has in her dad.
Her dad made her wooden carts, toy guns and racing toys with spools and rubber bands. He made her doll furniture, and once carved her a Tiki. Her Dad was there for science projects and bizarre art assignments. He taught her about feeding calves and gathering eggs, how to fish, how to make gravy, and how to drive. Her dad had a commanding presence that made her feel safe and protected, yet he was not overbearing. There was far more laughter than lecture.
Consequently, today is Father’s Day, and Ruby is giving thanks to God for giving her a father who is a real Dad.
