Ruby was just finishing up her mouth-watering ceasar salad and was about to attack her fresh strawberry shortcake. "I do feel apreciated!" she thought. The dinner was the finale of a week of events provided by the infirmary and designed to make her feel just that way.
It began last Friday morning, when she attached to her belt a pedometer she was given. That was for the 5-day walking competition between department teams.
Friday evening she attended the award banquet and received her 5-year pin. The banquet was very lush. She sat at a table with her fellow honorees, and enjoyed steak, and wine, and salad, followed by carrot cake, which until then served as the centerpiece for the table.
Following her dinner opportunity was given to spend fake gambling money at gaming tables set up at the far end of the auditorium. "Gambling it away seems like such a waste!" said Ruby, having a hard time not thinking of it as real money. That might have been her mistake, who knows. She started with "$1000" and ended up with "$700". Needless to say, prizes eluded her but fun did not.
Sunday at work, she received a yellow carnation as an appreciation gift. Monday she received an envelope with a pin shaped like a puzzle piece meant to symbolize the importance she plays as a piece in the puzzle that makes up the infirmary. She also received some "critter cash" which is like a gift certificate for $1 each that could be spent in the cafeteria or gift shop, but she was not allowed to keep these. She was to give them to her fellow empolyees after filling them out with a description of how they are appreciated.
On Tuesday there was an ice-cream social and she was allowed to build her own decadent sundae with any number of condiments.
Now, it was Wednesday, supper time, and she was enjoying her salad and strawberries.
"Weeks like this are something I am going to miss when I start working from home" she thought. Having no one-hour commute trumps it, however."
