Yellowstone then and now-Day 6.

Date: June 22, 1967
Place: Ontario, Oregon
Weather: Hot, growing cooler

We left bout 7:30 a.m. and headed for home. We enjoyed the trip; but we were ready to go home. We stopped at Multnomah Falls near Portland and enjoyed some of the scenery we had missed. We all had a snack, Mungo and I had snow-cones, and Mom and Dad had ice cream cones.

When the clerk handed Dad his ice-cream cone, Dad grasped it wi his "bear-like" grip and splatterd the ice cream and cone all over the counter!. The clerk got him a new one. We went up to Crown Point and took pictures, and then headed home.

We arrived home at about 6 p.m., weary but happy travelers.

AUGUST 25, 2006
LOCATION: Back in Yellowstone for one last look
WEATHER: Perfect.

After a little directional error, the family made its way back into Yellowstone park. Their first stop was Firehole falls, and then other waterfall.

They saw some more wildlife and many many more geysers and steaming pools.

They took a hike that took them through the remaining portion of the geyser basin which they had not hiked yet. Part of the trail was on the old highway. They hiked to Morning Glory Pool.

and saw Grand Geyser erupting.

While walking back they encountered a heard of bison blocking the trail. Following instructions, they remained back and waited until they decided to move.

Eventually the lead bison got up and headed across the river, the remainder of the heard obediently followed, opening up the trail for human foot-traffic once again.

After visiting The Paint Pots, the family divided. The elder half, heading in the direction of home. The younger half staying for one more day, making sure all sites were seen.

Mungo, Myrtle and Ruby still had a long journey ahead of them if they were going to make it to Missoula that night. The roads were narrow at points and curvy and points. "SLOW DOWN" went the voice inside Mungo. He obeyed. There appeared to be some sort of wildlife in the road. Mungo clamped hard on the brakes, the car swerved sideways and stopped within inches of a little fawn that stood frozen in the same spot, eyes fixed as soon as he saw the car. Thankfully Mungo had received divine guidance, or there would have been a nasty accident and a deer carcass to deal with at the very least.

Ruby called and left a message with the rest of the family back in Yellowstone.. "when you leave tomorrow, get to the freeway while there is still daylight!"

They took turns driving. As the hours ticked on and the hour got late, they tried to remain positive. They pulled into their Missoula motel after midnight, and once again went straight to bed.
