Yellowstone Then and Now--Day 4

Date June 21, 1967
PLACE: Cody, Wyoming
Weather: Grand!!

We left our little shanty as early as possible and headed for the Cody Museum. On the way we passed dozens of beatiful rock formations and went through Wyoming's largest tunnel on the Buffalo Bill Highway.

We stopped and looked at the Buffalo Bill Dam. We then reached the Cody museum, which I will never forget! We saw guns, saddles boots, gloves, jackets and dozens of pictures of Buffalo Bill. There were things there of Calamity Jane's and Annie Oakley too. There were original posters of the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show. There were two museums. The other was filled with Wild West paintings. Most from Remington and Russell.

We next headed back to Yellowstone where we fixed lunch and Chris fished off the fishing bridge. Unlike Montana, where he caught two fish, he had no luck this time. We saw 8 more bears, making a total of 21. This is counting one we saw as we entered the Grand Teton National Park. We also saw one cow moose.

On the way into Jackson Hole we stopped ant looked at the Cunningham Cabin, it had most of the original boards in it, although it was built in the 1800s. We saw a Prarie dog town around the cabin.

Closer to Jackson Hole we saw a coyote.

In Jackson Hole we stayed at a motel in the town and walked to the main street. There we ate supper and later witnessed a shootout, stage hold up and a near hanging in a little over 15 minutes. It was put on by the players at the Pink Garter Theater.

We went to an old fashioned candy store and had some homemade ice cream. I had banana-almond. Chris had some strawberry and spearmint licorice.

Jackson hole was a fascinating old town. It was really a chunk of the old west. It had boardwalks and the whole bit, just like you see on TV! In the city park they had a huge entrance arch made from elk horns.

Location: Cody, Wyoming

Weather: GREEAATT!

By the time the family in the cabin had arisen, showered, had a bite and packed up, Olo and Mereyann arrived from the ritzy accomodations to start the next day. Mungo went with Olo to check out the condition of his car. The remaining ladies went to Wal-Mart. Ruby sent a text message to Daisy, saying she was in Wal-Mart in Cody Wyoming, because it seems their new tradition never to miss one.

The Cody Museum was the first stop of the day.

It had grown from two musems to five museums. After entering the family decided when to meet back and dispersed to museums of their particular interest. In addition to the original Buffalo Bill museum and art exhibit, was a natural history exhibit, an exhibit of guns, and a large exibit of Native American culture.

Since Olo's car got an "all-clear"... the family headed back into Yellowstone. The wait for the pilot car was shorter this time.

They crossed the continental divide, something they would find themselves doing more than once over the next few days.

They then made their way into yellowstone. A traffic stall alerted them to a bear siting. They parked their cars and attempted to get a view. Some in the group got a better view of a large grizzly than others. Ruby saw a bear silhouette walking through the woods. She then quickly made her way back to the car!

The park seemed much more active volcanically this visit than the one Ruby made in the 1960s. Many, many geysers, and bubbling mud pools. They saw the Dragon-mouth Caldron, and many steaming pools like Morning Glory Pool.

They saw so many bison, that it was no longer a surprise to them. They saw elk and deer as well as they traveled the road to Old Faithful. It was closer to evening when they arrived.

They found a seat and waited for the show.

Soon the geyser began to spurt.... but then went back down... then spurted again, teasing the waiting audience for a while before the full Old Faithful display took place. The audience was not disappointed.

After a cruise through the gift shop, the family found a picnic table and ate their dinner. They then squeezed the last hours of daylight out of the day walking through the upper portion of the geyser basin.

At dark they headed for Jackson Hole... it was a little scary because the road as narrow, 2-lanes and wildlife, often more active at dark, liked to cross the road at that time. They stopped once, realizing they were out in the wilderness on a very dark night and enjoyed the view of The Milky Way, which was fabulous from their location. They knew they were near Jackson Hole when they could see the silhouette of the Tetons in the moonlight.

The travelers found their hotel at about 11:30.. they were very tired by then.
