"My surgery date has been moved up to the 10th of February!" said Berliac. He was happy. "When I get my other new knee working, I can hit the road with my new bike!" Everyone was happy for him.
But this week a dilemma developed. The highway between Berilac's town and Bywater has been obstructed by a rock slide that may take a full month to clear away. This leaves Berilac and Bella scrambling for the best way to get to surgery and for Bella to be available while Berilac is in the hospital.
Here are some options they have come up with to get to the doctor and handle the hospital stay.
1. Get up early wait for the tiny barge (there is only room for 12 cars on it) there are usually at least 24 waiting. Get on it.... go to surgery. Bella stay with Ruby.
The down-side of this plan is a lot hours spent on the road... and what about "Ike"?
"Ike" is a good dog, but he would eat Hazel Ann, Ruby's kitty, for breakfast.
2. Get up early and drive around to the bridge near the coast and come back on the other side of the river.
There would be less waiting on this plan and maybe an hour or so less time spent on the road. The distance would be twice as far as usual,however. The road is curvy and dangerous in parts, and there will likely be more traffic on it. There is an option that a neigbor will be able to drop in on "Ike" if he is not gone on vacation.
3. Drive to the ferry, leave the car near the ferry landing. Travel on foot on the ferry Ruby pick them up on the other side and take Bella back when she is ready to go..
4. Obtain a house sitter (who?) to take care of "Ike"and watch over things. Bella stay with Ruby until Berilac comes home. Ruby sensed that this was one of their favorite options.
"I wonder if anyone else has any ideas?" thought Ruby.
