You Can't Get There From Here

"Blimey!" Ruby spurted as she sat down at her desk. She was late and just undergone a harrowing experience.

After leaving a lovely morning with Bella and Berilac, and sharing sandwiches, pickles, apple slices and of course those lovely tiny cream puffs, she headed back to Bywater, expecting the normal quick 20-minute journey. Just as she reached the place where the old bump used to be, she was stopped.

"There's a slide up ahead. This road is closed" said the business-like constable.

"Should I take the ferry?" Ruby asked.

"Yes Maam, that would be my recommendation" he said. " You can turn around right here, there are no cars coming from the other direction." So Ruby did so.

It took her 20 minutes to reach the ferry landing, and there was a very long line. The tiny barge left the dock full twice before Ruby was able to drive onto it. She called her boss, she knew she was goint to be late. She called Bella, just to tell her what happened. She cleaned out her glove box and played some classical music on her stereo.

Finally she was able to board the ferry. The good news was the ride was free because the road was closed. The trip across the river was a smooth one. As she disembarked the ferry and drove along the highway on the other side she saw lots of high water and many small slide areas as well.

As she approached the bridge to take her into Bywater, there was a detour sign. A large truck was turned over in the exit and it was closed. A detour sign was posted.

She arrived home a half an hour late for work. "I have never had so much trouble getting home before!" she said.
