It was Daisy's job to represent the Mergatroid family at a baby shower for her step-sister-in-law in the big city to the north. It meant that the day would consist of a long journey there and back.
"Would you be willing to make the journey with me?" Daisy inquired of Ruby.
"I would absolutely love to!" Ruby replied, excitedly.
This gave Ruby a chance to visit Baby Rube, who is in the same city going to college. Ruby spent the upcoming week making meeting arrangements. On Saturday, after a quick stop for petrol and lattes, Ruby and Daisy hit the road.
Big city driving makes both Ruby and Daisy edgy. They were armed with instructions from the computer and Baby Rube's cell phone number. They managed to stumble around and find the meeting place. Baby Rube was waiting for them there. Ruby and Baby Rube then began their day's adventure.
The day started with a drive through town including a view of "The Troll." This is a very menacing carving of a large hairy creature that is holding a "slug-bug" in one hand. Ruby had heard mention of this carving many times, and she had seen photos of it, but she had never had the pleasure of a personal view of it.
"That is quite impressive!" she exclaimed.
Their journey to lunch included a trip through a part of town with many statues and murals.
"This part of town considers itself to be the center of the universe" Baby Rube explained.
"It is quite artsy" said Ruby.
The two then arrived at The Pasta Plant for lunch. This was a beautiful restaurant that looked out over the sound. It was full of antique light fixtures and antique tables and chairs. Many of the booths were made from antique bed frames. In the middle of the restaurant was an antique trolley car containing tables. They enjoyed a leisurely lunch while catching upon each others lives.
The ladies then traveled back through the town. Baby Rube pointed out points of interest until they arrived back at her dorm. They went in together and Baby Rube gave Ruby a tour of her room and introduced her to her roommate.
Just then Baby Rube's cell phone rang. "Daisy is ready to head home now," Baby Rube said after hanging up the phone. Ruby was then returned to the meeting place.
Ruby and Daisy then headed home, arriving about 7 p.m.
"I am so glad I got to do that" said a tired Ruby, after Daisy dropped her off in her driveway. She headeded into her cottage and spent the remainder of the day with her feet up.
