"Ruby, you have a baby brother!" said Aunt Olive to the 4-year-old Ruby. That was how Ruby first heard of Mungo, 50-years ago today. Although Ruby seemed underwhelmed at the time, her baby brother turned out to be one of her very best friends and a big blessing.

They did a lot of things together: Playing with neighborhood friends, exploring nearby wooded areas, walking to and from the school bus, riding bikes, picking berries and peeling Cascara bark, handling cattle, chickens, pigs, turkeys, kittens, puppies, bunnies, pidgeons, goats and a horse. He was there during her Girl Scout activities, and she was there during his Boy Scout activities. They entered things in the fair, they took music and swimming lessons. They listened to records. They saw The Beatles and CCR together.

When Ruby was first out on her own, and Mungo was just beginning to drive, he would frequently drop in on her and they would hang out and solve the world's problems together. When he had his first job, they briefly had apartments across from each other in the same building. They were together at a folk-choir rehearsal at church when Mungo met Myrtle.

Ruby and Mungo have always been able to talk, and so in the nearly five years of commuting they did together, they continued to solve life's problems, and so it remains, even today.
Therefore, although she was initially not to thrilled with having a baby brother, she can now say unequivocally that she is glad he came.
HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY MUNGO!.
